Scan This!
Hello Portland! Did you know that OregonLive has a police scanner on their site? Scanners are a little tough to decipher at first, due to all the codes and shop talk, but you can learn some interesting things if you manage to listen for a while. The fact that this is streaming live on the tubes is pretty damn cool. I wonder if I’ll hear anything about cats in trees or guys discharging firearms into Hawthorne street, in front of Sewickley’s!

It’s not just police on there, but EMS too – since they both come out of the same building. When Portland Fire Bureau is on a medical call, they sw oer to the EMS channels.
I helped get the 911 system on it’s feet back in the early 80s – not much, but I was there and did some training. Then helped get the 800mhz radio system up and running (again, a small bit part). When I left EMS and Portland 15 years ago, I would often logon to OregonLive and listen to the this stream as I looked at G-Maps or read the news of my hometown. Great way to reminisce about my 20+ year emergency services career.

I love police scanners. The OregonLive police scanner bums me out though, even with the incredibly evil RealPlayer for Mac installed I can’t get it to work.

Not exactly news. Online scanners have been available for years all over the country. Not always through newspaper websites, but it’s not unheard-of.
