For the Instruction of Little Sailors

May 6, 2008 at 12:06 am (a little something for my homos, archive.org, books)

For those of you who don’t already know, archive.org has a large library of old, scanned books, many of them from the Victorian era. They also have a nice browser that lets you page through the books and even save jpeg images of the pages.

Many of them are children’s books, such as the one I found today:

Many of these books contain interesting engravings and very odd assertions. Check out this page about sailors.

I find it a little doubtful that sailors on shore leave have trouble finding ways to spend their time. I’ve heard stories! Speaking of sailors having a good time, here’s a youtube video featuring some sailors who are definitely “very glad to be aboard their ship.” Ahoy!

Hellship Mutiny Not a Very Good Movie

May 4, 2008 at 8:20 am (archive.org) (, , , , )

I download and watch a lot of bad, old movies from archive.org, in search of those delicious campy moments or tidbits that, when taken out of context, become pure comedy gold. You’d think a movie called “Hellship Mutiny”, would at least have some supernatural elements, maybe a demon or two. (There wasn’t even a single flaming skull in this film.) The movie appeared promising at the start, when it opened on Salty the Chimp taunting a parrot. It’s all downhill from there, with the exception of these clips, punched out for your pleasure.

“Giant manta ray.” You slay me, movie.

I would feel bad about spending my Saturday night on this, but then I’d remember that I don’t care about weekends, anyway. Just in case you’ve got a real masochistic hankering and an afternoon to burn, here’s the link.
