The Land I Lost
Next in the series of Things That Scared the Shit Out of me as a Child, is The Land I Lost, a true account of growing up in Vietnam from Quang Nhuong Huynh. Up until now, the items in this series have been video media, but books are scary, too! Some might argue that books are even more powerful when it comes to sneaking through your ears and having their way with your tender, unshaped, juvenile soul.
I was actually made to read this book by a schoolteacher at the age of 8. While it’s a detailed and very interesting account of a child’s life in rural Vietnam. It is also frought, frought with horrors to chill your bones. Even more so because they aren’t supernatural phenomena or fantasy that someone dreamed up, but real things that walk this earth.
The book describes encounters with rampaging wild boar, man-eating snakes, a monkey trainer who works by cutting the heads off of FAIL monkeys to make examples of them, crocodiles, tigers. And, if I remember correctly, there’s even a part where a monkey, who’s been watching a butcher cut meat every day, sneaks into a house through a window and butchers a baby the exact same way.
That being said, like everything else that scared the shit out of me as a child, it’s memorable and pretty rad. It also might be part of the reason I have trouble sleeping at night.
